Cognitive assessments do not reward memorized answers — they reward a repeatable method. Pick a domain below and work through the reasoning process before you practice.

Verbal Reasoning

What This Skill Tests

Verbal reasoning measures how well you identify relationships between words, concepts, meanings, and actions, and whether you can apply that same relationship to a new pair. It is less about vocabulary size and more about recognizing the type of connection between two things.

Common Question Types

  • Word analogies ("A is to B as C is to ___")
  • Synonyms and antonyms in context
  • Sentence completion with logical connectors ("despite," "therefore," "although")
  • Short passages requiring an inference or valid conclusion

How to Approach It

  1. Identify the relationship between the first pair of words. Ask: is it a tool used for a purpose, a cause and effect, a category and example, or an action and its object?
  2. State that relationship in a short sentence, in your own words.
  3. Apply the same sentence structure to the third word to find what the answer must relate to.
  4. Test each option by substituting it into your sentence — the correct one will fit naturally.
"Book is to Read as Meal is to ___"
1Identify the relationship between the first two words: a book is something that is read — it describes the typical action performed with that object.
2State it as a rule: "[Object] is something that is [action]."
3Apply the rule to "meal": a meal is something that is eaten. Test the options — "cook" and "prepare" describe making the meal, not experiencing it, and "serve" describes presenting it. Only "eat" matches the same relationship as book-to-read.

  • Picking an answer that is merely "related" to the third word instead of matching the exact relationship type.
  • Overanalyzing simple analogies and second-guessing an obviously correct match.

Numerical Reasoning

What This Skill Tests

Numerical reasoning measures how efficiently you work with numbers: sequences, percentages, ratios, proportions, and comparisons. Most questions test your ability to identify the right calculation quickly — not to perform advanced mathematics.

Common Question Types

  • Number sequences and patterns
  • Percentage increase, decrease, and reversal ("what was the original price?")
  • Ratios and proportional scaling
  • Averages, totals, and simple data comparisons

How to Approach It

  1. Identify exactly what information the question gives you.
  2. Identify exactly what the question is asking for — underline or restate it in one line.
  3. Identify the mathematical relationship that connects the two (percentage, ratio, sequence rule, etc.).
  4. Calculate efficiently — round intermediate steps only if the final answer allows it.
  5. Check whether your result is reasonable given the scale of the numbers in the question.
A jacket is sold for $84 after a 30% discount. What was the original price?
1Information given: sale price is $84, discount is 30%. What's asked: the original (pre-discount) price.
2If the price dropped by 30%, then $84 represents 70% of the original price.

Logical Reasoning

What This Skill Tests

Logical reasoning measures how you handle rules, conditions, and deductions — whether you can break a complex statement into smaller steps and work out exactly what must, might, or cannot be true.

Common Question Types

  • Syllogisms ("All A are B, some B are C...")
  • Conditional rules ("If X, then Y")
  • Sequencing and ordering tasks
  • Identifying the one conclusion that must follow from given statements

How to Approach It

  1. Break the statement into separate, simple facts. Write each one down as its own short rule.
  2. Note what type of statement it is: a certainty ("all"), a possibility ("some"), or a condition ("if...then").
  3. Eliminate any answer option that directly contradicts a given fact.
  4. Of the remaining options, choose the one that is guaranteed by the facts — not merely likely.
All senior editors review drafts. No draft reviewers approve their own work. Priya is a senior editor. What follows?

Common Mistakes

  • Reversing a conditional rule ("if X then Y" does not mean "if Y then X").
  • Choosing an answer that sounds plausible instead of one the facts actually guarantee.
  • Trying to hold the whole problem in your head instead of writing the facts down step by step.

Abstract Reasoning

What This Skill Tests

Abstract reasoning measures pattern recognition without relying on language or numbers. You are shown a sequence of shapes or figures and must work out the rule governing how they transform from one step to the next.

Common Question Types

  • Shape or figure sequences that follow a transformation rule
  • Rotation, reflection, or movement patterns
  • Changes in size, number of elements, or shading
  • "Odd one out" among a set of related figures

How to Approach It

  1. Ask what changed between each step and what stayed the same.
  2. Check specifically for rotation, movement, size change, or a change in the number of elements.
  3. Confirm the rule is consistent across every step you're shown, not just the first two.
  4. Apply the same rule forward to predict the next or missing figure.
A shape rotates 90 degrees clockwise at each step. If Step 1 shows an arrow pointing up, which direction does it point at Step 4?
1What changed: the arrow's direction. What stayed the same: the shape itself and the rotation amount (90° each step).
2Step 1: up. Step 2: right (90°). Step 3: down (180° total). Step 4: left (270° total).

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming a pattern from only the first two figures without confirming it holds for later steps too.
  • Confusing rotation with reflection (a mirror flip is not the same as a turn).
  • Missing a second, simultaneous rule (for example, rotation and a change in shading happening together).

Time Management & Staying Calm Under Pressure

Knowing the method is not the same as using it against a clock. These assessments are timed, and how you handle that time and your nerves affects your score as much as your reasoning does.

Set a Per-Question Budget

With 32 questions in 20 minutes, aim for roughly 35–40 seconds per question. If a question is taking noticeably longer, mark your best guess and move on — you can't get partial credit for time spent.

Identify the Question Type Fast

In the first few seconds, decide: is this an analogy, a percentage problem, a conditional rule, or a rotation pattern? Naming the type immediately tells you which method to apply.

Eliminate Before You Solve

Scan the answer options first and cross out anything obviously wrong. Choosing between two remaining options is far faster and more accurate than evaluating all four from scratch.

Avoid Overthinking Simple Questions

If a straightforward relationship or calculation immediately makes sense, trust it. Second-guessing correct first instincts is one of the most common ways candidates lose time.

Recover Quickly After a Hard Question

One difficult question is not the whole test. Take one breath, submit your best answer, and move on with a clear head — dwelling on it only costs you time on the next question too.

Reduce Assessment Anxiety Beforehand

Familiarity reduces anxiety. Completing practice questions like the ones on this page — under similar time pressure — is one of the most effective ways to walk into a real assessment feeling prepared rather than uncertain.

Use Brief Resets Between Sections

When you notice a shift in question domain, take one slow breath before reading the first new question. This resets your focus for the reasoning style ahead.

Answer Every Question

Unless told otherwise, an educated guess based on partial elimination is better than leaving a question blank. Never let time expire on unanswered questions you could have attempted.
